We talk a lot about team-bonding, specifically when addresses the current widespread trend of remote work. But what does that really mean? When I got to share my MCP with my team and hear theirs as well – wow! what a game changer. Sharing stories – the ones that have shaped up – has created a deeper sense of connection and made it so much easier for us to be authentic and vulnerable with each other. It makes the workplace so much more meaningful and personally motivates me to invest more care into what I do.
It is so easy to get caught up in the narrative of struggle, whether because of discrimination based on gender, sexuality, race, or religion, or circumstances like lack of resources, low income, illness, abusive bosses – you get the picture! With the MCP, Yen takes great care to make sure you feel heard, and then reflects everything you said as a growth narrative. It is an enormous perspective shift, and after seeing written out how I’ve developed and learned from my experiences – especially the hard ones.
There is no way to overstate how crucial and necessary it is for people to be able to show up not just in work, but in any environment, as their full authentic self. As a transwoman who came out later in life, I faced an enormous set of obstacles in the process. I had a boss who did not accept me for who I was, and it eroded my ability to function daily. If you’re not able to show up as your full self, how are you supposed to get anything done? I was the director of my department as well and found it so humiliating to be trying to lead a team while constantly being undermined, misnamed, and disrespected in front of my colleagues. How is that supposed to be a position from which to support others? Working with Yen on my MCP, she helped shift my feelings of having been defeated, to point out that when I left that job, I was insisting on being my authentic self. I cannot begin to stress how empowering and liberating it is to look back at what has felt like a great failure and see it now as a huge win – by establishing my insistence on standing up for myself, I am so much more confident and willing to step into spaces that I was previously intimidated by. I know now that I will not let myself down, and that’s a really different and amazing way to feel!
